Summary

Qoherent is seeking an enthusiastic, curious, and self-driven newly graduated engineering student to join our team as an Applications Engineering Specialist. In this role, you will contribute to the creation of advanced machine learning applications for software-defined radios, support technical engagements with key customers, design and produce datasets for RF machine learning training, and help drive commercial development efforts. This position offers the opportunity to work across software, embedded systems, signal processing, and machine learning within a growing deep-tech startup.

This is a full-time hybrid position requiring 2-3 days on-site per week, combining remote flexibility with in-person collaboration in downtown Toronto. This role will be a 6 month contract, which may be renewed, and with consideration for becoming a permanent position at the end of the contract.


Responsibilities

Dataset Creation and Design

  • Design, curate, and manage datasets for ML-based radiofrequency signal recognition.
  • Develop software tools to assist with dataset creation, transformation and validation.
  • Support data collection activities, including building repeatable workflows and validating signal quality.
  • Help define data specifications needed for training and evaluating ML models.

Technical Support Services

  • Participate in delivering contracted technical support services on behalf of a key Qoherent customer.
  • Provide technical support for software defined radio related products, including troubleshooting SDR hardware, firmware, networking, and system level issues.
  • Investigate and resolve customer reported issues across hardware, software and RF environments.
  • Assist with writing technical documentation such as user guides, troubleshooting guides and quick-start materials.

Supporting Commercial Development

  • Build demonstrations, prototypes, and proof-of-concepts using the Qoherent platform.
  • Create demo collateral, videos, case studies and technical marketing materials.
  • Conduct research into target high markets and identify high-value applications for Qoherent technology.
  • Support commercial engagements with technical insights and hands-on engineering work.

Qualifications

Required

  • Degree in Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • Hands-on experience with C/C++ and Python.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux environments and open-source ecosystems.
  • Proficiency with Git version control.
  • Familiarity with bash scripting.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded hardware and practical debugging.
  • Ability to commute to Toronto.

Desired

  • Experience with RF or audio signal-processing tools (MATLAB, Octave, GNU Radio, NumPy, SciPy, CommPy).
  • Understanding of signal-processing fundamentals: FFTs, filters, noise, linearity, modulation.
  • Experience with embedded software development.
  • Familiarity with AI and ML concepts.
  • Experience with software-defined radio hardware and toolchains.
  • Experience with USRPs, UHD, and related RF tools.
  • Strong technical writing skills for proposals, reports, or whitepapers.
  • Completion of a qualifying technical degree or diploma program within a Canadian post-secondary institution.
