Sales & Applications Engineering Specialist

^

Qoherent • Hybrid • Full-Time • Toronto (Downtown)

Summary

Qoherent is building AI-powered tools for the radiofrequency domain, helping organizations make sense of the electromagnetic spectrum using machine learning and software-defined radio. We’re a small, technical team based in Toronto working on projects that span defense, space, and telecommunications.

We’re looking for a Sales & Applications Engineering Specialist to help grow our commercial footprint. This role is split roughly 50/50 between applications engineering (building demos, prototypes, and technical collateral) and sales execution, including pipeline management, proposal writing, and customer engagement. You’ll work closely with the CEO and engineering team to bring our technology to market.

This is a foundational commercial role in a growing startup. We’re looking for someone who wants to build the playbook, not just follow one. Long-term, this position offers a clear path toward solutions or commercial leadership.

Location & Work Model

  • Hybrid: in office 2-3 days per week at our downtown Toronto location, except when traveling.
  • Must be within commuting distance of downtown Toronto.

Eligibility & Travel

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada and able to freely travel across North America and Europe.
  • Canadian citizenship is strongly preferred due to the nature of our project portfolio.
  • Travel is sporadic and project-dependent. There may be months with no travel, or intensive stretches of up to several weeks on the road for customer engagements, conferences, and demonstrations.

Responsibilities

Applications & Technical Enablement

  • Build, package, and maintain customer-ready demonstrations of the Qoherent RIA platform, including reliable setups, repeatable scripts, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Deliver live demos to both technical and non-technical audiences, adapting messaging to the context.
  • Create prototypes and proof-of-concepts that support customer evaluations and pilot programs.
  • Produce technical collateral such as application notes, demo briefs, case studies, and short-form video content.
  • Support technical customer engagements: reproduce reported issues, troubleshoot across software, hardware, networking, and RF environments, and coordinate resolutions with the engineering team.
  • Capture customer and market feedback to inform the product roadmap, feature priorities, and positioning.
  • As needed, support the R&D team in project delivery.

Sales Execution & Commercial Development

  • Support opportunities from discovery through close: qualification, follow-up, technical scoping, and maintaining next-step discipline.
  • Help sell Qoherent’s products, services, projects, and intellectual property by shaping the technical approach and articulating value.
  • Write and contribute to customer proposals and grant applications, including technical sections, work plans, deliverables, and assumptions.
  • Maintain pipeline hygiene: clear CRM notes, defined next steps, timelines, and lightweight reporting.
  • Help refine and formalize our sales processes and reusable assets including qualification checklists, proposal templates, demo scripts, and go-to-market playbooks.
  • Represent Qoherent at conferences, trade shows, and industry events. Help shape our marketing programs and presence.

Qualifications

Required

  • Undergraduate degree in a technical discipline (Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechatronics, or closely related field).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfort building, debugging, and troubleshooting practical systems that involve both software and hardware.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent activities (e.g. demos, proposals, pipeline) with organized execution.
  • Eligible to work in Canada and able to travel internationally as required.

Preferred

  • 1–2 years of experience in applications engineering, solutions engineering, technical, systems engineering, or a customer-facing technical role. New graduates with strong project or co-op experience will be considered.
  • Familiarity with one or more of: software-defined radio, RF or signal processing fundamentals, Linux environments, networking, or Python/C++ tooling.
  • Experience building demo environments that are stable, repeatable, and presentable.
  • Strong technical writing skills including proposals, reports, whitepapers, or technical documentation.

Strong Assets

  • Master’s degree in a technical discipline.
  • MBA or graduate-level business coursework, particularly in technology commercialization or strategy.
  • P.Eng. licensure in Ontario, or actively pursuing licensure (EIT or track-to-P.Eng.).
  • Experience with USRPs, GNU Radio, UHD, or similar SDR toolchains.

Growth Path

This role is designed to evolve. As the company grows, so does the scope of this position into areas like solutions leadership, commercial strategy, or technical business development. We’re looking for someone who wants to help build the commercial function.

What We Offer

  • Dental, health, and vision coverage.
  • Professional development opportunities.
  • Flexible vacation policy.
  • Direct exposure to AI, machine learning, and software-defined radio technologies.
  • A collaborative, early-stage startup environment where your contributions have visible impact.
  • Hybrid flexibility with a downtown Toronto office.
